On The Air ALL ARTICLES DEAN JOHNSON RECIPIENT OF “2011 TOM BROKAW AWARD” SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 Dean Johnson of KXLG Radio, Watertown, SD was honored as the recipient of the “2011 Tom Brokaw Award” by the South Dakota Broadcasters Association (SDBA) at their Annual State Leadership Conference held September 16th and 17th at The Lodge in Deadwood, SD. The Tom Brokaw Award is presented annually in a cooperative effort between the SDBA and the Department of Contemporary Media and Journalism at the University of South Dakota (USD). The first recipient of the award was former news anchor Tom Brokaw in 1981. The award is given in recognition of excellence in broadcasting especially in the areas of electronic journalism (on or off-air involvements) and public affairs to an individual who is a native of South Dakota, educated in South Dakota, or has made a significant contribution to South Dakota broadcasting. In addition to receiving a plaque of recognition, this honor is also commemorated by adding the recipient’s name to a plaque on permanent display in the Al Neuharth Media Center at USD. Dean has been in radio for 35 years. He joined KWAT and KIXX in Watertown as a salesperson in 1976, and went on to become general manager in 1980. He served as Vice President and Director of Sorenson Broadcasting Corporation from 1987 until 2002. Dean was Boot Camp Sales Training Director for dozens of radio stations not only in SD, but all over the Midwest. Dean is involved in a large number of community organizations, is very active with the Church, and has served on the Jenkins Nursing Home Board of Directors for the past 27 years. The SD Broadcasters Association is proud to present the 2011 Tom Brokaw Award to Dean Johnson. The SD Broadcasters Association is a trade association that represents South Dakota’s radio and television stations. It provides education, regulatory assistance and legislative representation to its members. |
