SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

Mark Ovenden, Sports Director of KDLT-TV, in Sioux Falls, SD was honored as the recipient of the “2008 Tom Brokaw Award” by the South Dakota Broadcasters Association (SDBA) at their annual state executive conference held September 28th and 29th at the KbarS Lodge in Keystone, SD.

The Tom Brokaw Award is presented annually in a cooperative effort between the SDBA and the Department of Contemporary Media and Journalism at the University of South Dakota (USD). The first recipient of the award was former news anchor Tom Brokaw in 1981.

The award is given in recognition of excellence in broadcasting especially in the areas of electronic journalism (on or off-air involvements) and public affairs to an individual who is a native of South Dakota, educated in South Dakota, or has made a significant contribution to South Dakota broadcasting. In addition to receiving a plaque of recognition, this honor is also commemorated by adding the recipient’s name to a plaque on permanent display in the Al Neuharth Media Center at USD.

Mark has been sportscasting with zeal for 33 years. Mark is famous for his enthusiasm for local sports and corny sense of humor. He’s won Sportscast of the Year at each of the three Sioux Falls television stations, and Sportscaster of the Year from both the South Dakota Coaches Association and Eyes on You Magazine. Mark is also a winner of the Distinguished Service Award from the South Dakota High School Athletics Association.

The SD Broadcasters Association is proud to present the 2008 Tom Brokaw Award to Mark Ovenden. The SD Broadcasters Association is a trade association that represents South Dakota’s radio and television stations. It provides education, regulatory assistance and legislative representation to its members.
